Tom Eblen: Lexington developer turns Campton's old school into ...
The beloved Wolfe County landmark sat empty for a decade atop a hill overlooking town, slowly falling apart before everyone’s eyes. Baseball-size hail broke windows and damaged the roof in March 2012, the same night a tornado destroyed much of nearby West Liberty. Two years later, teenaged vandals broke into the school and went on a rampage.“If you hadn’t come along when you did, we would have lost this place,” J.C. Brooks told Lexington developer Holly Wiedemann as we walked through the forme..

Girl Scout cookies in Lexington are different from those in Louisville ...
It’s Girl Scout cookie season in the Kentucky Bluegrass, where you are likely to purchase a box of Caramel deLites and scoff when someone at your office claims the chocolate-coconut cookie is really called Samoas. That’s because there are two bakeries in the Girl Scout cookie business, and each council — which oversees troops in a specific region — chooses which bakery provides them with cookies.Susan Douglas, chief executive officer of the Wilderness Road Council of Girl Scouts in Lexington, sa..

Balagula Theatre may be gone, but its influence will endure
When word spread in December 2014 that Balagula Theatre’s co-founding artistic directors Ryan Case and Natasha Williams had resigned amid financial troubles, you could almost feel the theater community collectively hold its breath to see what would happen next. Regardless of Balagula’s fate, it felt like the end of an era.We now know that the Balagula era ..

Notes: Marcus Lee gives UK a counter to Gamecocks inside
With Alex Poythress sidelined and facing arguably the Southeastern Conference’s most physical team, Kentucky needed one of its “bigs” to play well. Marcus Lee was that “big.”Lee posted his first double-double since Nov. 30 to help Kentucky beat South Carolina 89-62 Saturday. He scored 11 points (first double-digit total since Jan. 5) and grabbed a career-high 13 rebounds. The latter tied Poythress (13 against Eastern Kentucky) for the most rebounds grabbed by a UK player this season.“So proud o..

Turning trash into treasure: Seedleaf hosts discussion on composting
The question is simple: How can Lexington turn food waste from a challenge into an opportunity? The answer is not so simple, but a group of residents tackled it Saturday during small-group discussions on composting and food recycling.“Food has more value than just being a nutrient,” said Sarah Legas Newman in the meeting at Sayre School in downtown Lexington. She meant that kitchen scraps, coffee grounds, peels, rinds, leaves, grass clippings and other organic matter has value when it breaks down..
